Despite snow delays last week, Jasper Middle School students were able to enjoy a performance by Alpin Hong today. He captivated them with his stories and especially playing notable tunes like Mario Brothers and Harry Potter theme songs. JCAC board member accompanied Alpin on her violin for a tune or two.

Every year we have a reception for the Visual Arts Committee. At this time, we also honor the 350+ volunteers who help us throughout the year. The Visual Arts Committee is exhibiting work in the Krempp Gallery this month through December 17th. These are the people who select the exhibits for next season as well as make recommendations for workshops and other programming. Many are accomplished artists themselves. Mark Nizer entertained audiences of all ages today. In addition to his 3D juggling, jokes and stunts, audience members were invited to learn how to juggle in our lobby before and after the event. They tried their hands at juggling scarves, balls, and bean bags. Some were better than others.

Area artists are exhibiting at the Dubois County Art Guild show this summer. A variety of work is being shown. The reception was well-attended and the food and flowers were beautiful. Guild members had several raffles for original mini-paintings which they gave away as prizes. The student art scholarship award went to Hannah Backer who will attending Ball State University.

This summer we offered three weeks of fun for area kids, PreK through 8th grade. Music, art, drama, dance. Some students made their own place settings from clay. Others were into fashion design. Drama and music were new offereings and were both popular.

Kids made their own foodware in "A Place for Me!" Our summer intern Kendra helped the instructors in both classes. Class instructor Corey Eckerle helped students master the pottery wheel. She was a former summer intern and now teaches at an area elementary school.

Boo hoo. Our 7th annual Chalk Walk had to be postponed due to rain for the very first time. However, we were able to have it the following Saturday, May 8th, and ended up registering more people than every before! Trinity Tree House preschool visited the arts center today. The children had fun viewing the art exhibit. Later they got to try out the barre in our dance studio. They also got to pretend being different people by trying on hats for all kinds of occupations.

K.J. Denhert stopped by the Jasper High School this morning to conduct a masterclass for band and choir students. The kids were impressed with her music, especially Lucky 7 which emphasized her message of to never give up. Alway follow your dreams. K.J. led the class in several exercises on timing. The Backstage audience was delighted with the performance by K. J. Denhert and her band tonight. Her honey-smooth voice and accompanying guitar was a perfect medium for her music which she describes as urban-folk and jazz. Her musicans were fabulous, too! Just two weeks before election day, we hosted a Congressional debate for Indiana's 9th district. Although this one didn't receive as much publicity as the gubernatorial debate that we had last month, we still had over 200 people turn out. It was also aired on regional TV and radio. Bon jour! Mauvais Sort, a French-Canadian group is visiting us all week through the Arts Midwest program, Midwest Worldfest. They started their week off today with two informational performances at Tenth Street School. Over 400 children participated with clapping, stomping and singing. Youth Art Month is celebrated across the nation in March, but local schools particularly look forward to the event. Susan Carr, photographer from Chicago, gave a gallery talk Tuesday. Her photography has been the feature exhibit in the Krempp Gallery during February. The exhibit of black and white photos depicts the home interiors of people who have lived in them for 40 or more years. A typical performance requires 10-12 hours behind the scenes work for every two hour performance. We are very fortunate that we have a dedicated core of volunteers who help us on these long days. The Regional Arts Partnership Grant Awards Ceremony was held in the Krempp Gallery this evening. As Region 11 partner for the Indiana Arts Commission, Jasper Community Arts administers arts grants to six counties - Crawford, Davies, Dubois, Martin, Orange and Perry. Our visiting performers from Mexico, Los Utrera, entertained students and staff at VUJC auditorium last evening. Over 90 people attended. The musical group sang, danced, and played a variety of Mexican instruments. This family group is very talented. ARTventures summer arts camp started this week. We have an entire slate of classes with clay, painting and drawing, fashion, and pre-school for kids ages 3- 14. Classes are small and everyone gets plenty of hands-on experience. Next week we'll have Mixed-up Fairy Tales taught by our resident dance instructor, Carolyn Randolph. Glennis Redmond was at the Jasper Middle School the week of March 12th. This poet, writer extraordinaire dazzled her audience in a school assembly, worked with some students in the classroom, and also continued her work with teachers through our Kennedy Center Partners in Education program. March is Youth Art Month across the nation. At the Jasper Arts Center, we host a month-long exhibit of the area high schools and on alternate years, elementary schools. We have had a very busy month at the Arts Center. Yesterday, The Cat in the Hat was visiting, along with all his friends. An audience of neary 500 youngesters and young-at-hearts in attendance. Seussical the Musical by TheatreworksUSA was the performance. They danced. They sang. They rhymed in time. NO ONE fell asleep during this performance!

Jill Watson, our Region 11 coordinator, took her INteract group to French Lick this week. Phil Beaver, a fiber artist extrodinaire, hosted the group of 30 artists and other interested people.
